              People who have been suffering from chronic insomnia or those who are suffering from this disorder should decide if they need to take sleep medications or not.  This is a decision that needs the help of a physician.  Many people take off sleeping pills as it gives them relief from their sleep disorders and also from those symptoms that do not allow them to sleep.  Taking these pills will help in improving the quality of life as well as how the person feels.  Many people are quite afraid of the health risks and also the side effects of these pills.  This is one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States of America and is continued being used.<br />
There are two types of medications that are offered to those with insomnia.  They are over the counter medications and prescriptions.  Each of these sleep medications do have different effects on people.  How effective the pill is, is a major factor when it comes to dealing with the disorder.  Also the amount of time the pill will take to work and also how long it will last are also other important factors.  This effect has to go in with the problem of the person.  Drugs that act very quickly would be more useful for those who find it difficult to fall asleep.  Fro those who have problem in staying asleep can take pills that last longer.<br />
There are also other factors that have to be considered for those who are taking these pills.  This depends on the tolerance the person has for that particular drug, the quality of sleep, the side effects that are associated with it and possibilities of getting addicted to the drug.  It is important to consider all these before taking the drug fro this chronic disorder.<br />
A primary active ingredient that is used in these over the counter medications are antihistamines.  These are widely being used to treat allergies.  They also help in putting people to sleep.  Research is however being done on the safety factor as well as the long term effectiveness.<br />
Prescription medicines are classified into four different categories.  The four are benzodiazepine receptor agonists, melatonin receptor agonists, antidepressants and barbiturates.  Each of these drug categories has specific benefits in treating insomnia.  It is however important to check if the right sort of chronic medication is being given to each individual.<br />
Determining the source of insomnia is more important than choosing a medication for sleeping.  This is because the sleeping illness maybe due to a side effect of some other medicine that is being taken.  This sort of insomnia is called secondary insomnia.  The focus should now be on primary illness.  Once the underlying cause is taken care of the insomnia will disappear.<br />
The decision of taking a sleep medication for chronic insomnia has to be a decision that is made by you.  There is no wrong or right decision.  It is important as you need to be educated on this topic before you take the medication.            </p>

If you are sensitive to sounds, and if you sleep better in a nearly silent environment, you may also want to try ear plugs. On the other hand, maybe you like falling asleep to sounds, but they need to be the &#8220;right kinds of sounds&#8221; (perhaps the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, or white noise, or soft, instrumental classical music).  Consider experimenting with a few different types of sounds. &#13;4.  Look into trying certain kinds of decaffeinated herbal teas (chamomile, for instance) that are widely known for reducing tension and anxiety and soothing you off to sleep. &#13;5.  Shut off the television and the computer as early as possible, so that you can avoid too much stimulus and start to &#8220;unplug&#8221; from the hectic pace of your daytime life. &#13;6.  Exercise is great for helping you to fall asleep, but it needs to be done at the right time of day.  For instance, exercising right before bed can actually be over-stimulating rather than relaxing.  So, if at all possible, consider exercising at the beginning of the day, or perhaps some time in the middle.  The exercise can be moderate or vigorous, depending upon your preference, but just be sure to time it correctly, in a way that will aid your sleep rather than impede it. &#13;7.  To quiet your mind at bedtime, use one or more effective stress reduction techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing or visualizing pleasant scenes (like you sitting on a beautiful beach). &#13;In some instances, a combination of some of the above practical tips and one or more natural insomnia cures (such as drinking herbal tea) may &#8220;do the trick&#8221; for you on most nights.  For instance, your mind and body might respond best to a combination of further darkening your room, wearing eye shades to bed, altering the temperature of your bedroom at night, drinking some chamomile tea in the evenings, and getting up at the exact same time every single morning (even on the weekends). &#13;When seeking natural insomnia cures, the point is to be open minded and willing to form new sleep habits.  When you are not getting enough sleep, it can be extremely difficult to function properly, and it can also make you irritable.               Insomnia is the sleeping disorder that prevents a person from getting a quality night&#8217;s sleep.  In fact, insomnia can keep a person up for many days.  This leaves the person feeling tired, wasted and weary.  Your body needs sleep to recharge, it needs quality sleep in order to perform at its best.  Therefore, if you suffer from insomnia and you just can&#8217;t seem to fall asleep at night, it is important that you find some form of insomnia treatment quickly.  To find the right insomnia treatment, however, you need to find out just what&#8217;s keeping you up all those sleepless nights. &#13;Is It Something You&#8217;re Doing?&#13;Sometimes, insomnia is caused by what the person is doing.  That&#8217;s right, you could be causing your very own insomnia.  The reason you can&#8217;t sleep can be due to the fact that you&#8217;re eating certain foods or maybe you&#8217;re drinking too much coffee.  Caffeine from coffee and other foods can keep you tossing and turning, unable to sleep, so a good insomnia treatment would be to try and eliminate such things from your diet. There are many over the counter medicines that can help you fall asleep.  However, try the above insomnia treatments first before the medicine.
