Always Start By Trying Insomnia Natural Treatments

Have you recently had trouble getting to sleep at night ? If so, you are not alone because insomnia is a massive problem here in the United States. Millions of Americans rely on prescription sleep aids in order to get a good night’s rest and perhaps you are so physically exhausted that you are considering joining them. Before you do, you should know that prescription insomnia medicines are not good for the treatment of long term insomnia because many are addictive, and they can cause some unwanted side effects. When it comes to insomnia, natural treatments are always preferable.

A Few Small Changes

Insomnia natural treatments are not complicated. In fact, many insomnia natural treatments are completely free since they merely mean changing your habits and routine. These changes should start with your diet since eating the wrong foods and drinking certain beverages can stop your brain and body from functioning in the way it should. Start by cutting down on processed foods that contain additives, caffeine based products and alcohol. Instead consume only fresh whole foods and beverages.

Regular exercise is another insomnia natural treatment, especially if you do it in the earlier part of the day. That doesn’t mean that you have to start running marathons or boxing. All that is required is moderate exercise such as a brisk walking for half an hour or so each day and some endurance work such as yoga a few times per week. So long as you get your heart pumping and keep your muscles active you should find it much easier to get to sleep at night.

Other natural insomnia treatments seem simple but many people overlook them. For instance, you need to insure that your bedroom is conducive to sleep. In others words, the room should be dark, quiet, cool and well ventilated. Do not try to sleep with any synthetic materials next to your skin since this will make you sweat. Turn your alarm clock  away from you so that you will not be tempted to keep looking at it. Have a warm bath and a hot milky drink before bed. Avoid stimulating activities at bedtime and try not to think about your problems or over-analyze anything once you turn the light out. If you can’t sleep, get out of bed and do something boring until you start feel sleepy instead of lying there stressing about it.

Other Remedies

Many people find that herbal treatments for insomnia work very well. These herbs include things like chamomile, kava kava and valerian root. There are other natural insomnia treatments that you can purchase online or at your local drug store. These include vitamin B12, magnesium and the essential amino acid L-Tryptophan. They work by encouraging the production of the natural sleep hormone melatonin. Some experts think that electromagnetic radiation from computers, cell phones and other electronic equipment causes a depletion in our serotonin and melatonin levels, which is why so many of us have trouble sleeping. Synthetic melatonin is available for purchase at most drug stores.
