People who have been suffering from chronic insomnia or those who are suffering from this disorder should decide if they need to take sleep medications or not. This is a decision that needs the help of a physician. Many people take off sleeping pills as it gives them relief from their sleep disorders and also from those symptoms that do not allow them to sleep. Taking these pills will help in improving the quality of life as well as how the person feels. Many people are quite afraid of the health risks and also the side effects of these pills. This is one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States of America and is continued being used.
There are two types of medications that are offered to those with insomnia. They are over the counter medications and prescriptions. Each of these sleep medications do have different effects on people. How effective the pill is, is a major factor when it comes to dealing with the disorder. Also the amount of time the pill will take to work and also how long it will last are also other important factors. This effect has to go in with the problem of the person. Drugs that act very quickly would be more useful for those who find it difficult to fall asleep. Fro those who have problem in staying asleep can take pills that last longer.
There are also other factors that have to be considered for those who are taking these pills. This depends on the tolerance the person has for that particular drug, the quality of sleep, the side effects that are associated with it and possibilities of getting addicted to the drug. It is important to consider all these before taking the drug fro this chronic disorder.
A primary active ingredient that is used in these over the counter medications are antihistamines. These are widely being used to treat allergies. They also help in putting people to sleep. Research is however being done on the safety factor as well as the long term effectiveness.
Prescription medicines are classified into four different categories. The four are benzodiazepine receptor agonists, melatonin receptor agonists, antidepressants and barbiturates. Each of these drug categories has specific benefits in treating insomnia. It is however important to check if the right sort of chronic medication is being given to each individual.
Determining the source of insomnia is more important than choosing a medication for sleeping. This is because the sleeping illness maybe due to a side effect of some other medicine that is being taken. This sort of insomnia is called secondary insomnia. The focus should now be on primary illness. Once the underlying cause is taken care of the insomnia will disappear.
The decision of taking a sleep medication for chronic insomnia has to be a decision that is made by you. There is no wrong or right decision. It is important as you need to be educated on this topic before you take the medication.
