Common Medical Causes Of Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep condition where the individual affected suffers from lack of sleep. This lack of sleep stems from psychological and medical causes of insomnia. While the psychological factors that contribute to insomnia are plentiful, the medical causes of insomnia may actually be limited.

Medications Can Cause Insomnia

One of the medical causes of insomnia are medications and drugs which may be prescribed to the individual (or even over the counter drugs). Medication can be one of the causes of insomnia in children as well. Some of the medications or drugs that may be some causes of insomnia in people are nicotine. Antidepressants, beta blockers and beta agonists. The ingestion of drugs and prescribed medication affects people differently. This means that not everyone reacts the same way to the drug or medication, implying that insomnia may or may not happen to those who take the same drug or medication.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions have also been pinpointed as some of the medical causes of insomnia in people. These medical conditions include hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, asthma, hypertension, arthritis and heart disease. Of course, some medical causes of insomnia will also include the onset of pain and discomfort caused by injuries and other conditions which manifest in pain or discomfort. A tingling sensation, not necessarily painful can also keep an individual from getting a good night’s sleep.

Sleep apnea is also another one of the many medical causes of insomnia. This condition is actually a breathing disorder where the individual may stop breathing for a very short period of time while sleeping. As the body gasps for air when this happens, the individual may wake from the effort. Restless leg syndrome is another cause of insomnia. This condition is one in which the individual’s legs feel a sensation akin to twitching or they feel the urge to move when in a stationary position.

Medical causes of insomnia are less common than psychological causes of insomnia. The medical causes of insomnia may be easier to deal with than the psychological causes of the sleep disorder. There are also cases of the medical causes of insomnia being difficult to resolve since the underlying medical reason or condition needs to be dealt with to free the individual from the disorder.
