Men Also Experience Signs And Symptoms Of Menopause

Female menopause is widely researched and women have access to untold resources to help them identify and cope with the signs and symptoms of menopause. Where does that leave men? Even with all the evidence available, many men still scoff at the idea of male menopause. For them these are “women’s things” and do not affect them. The reality is that all men go through a menopausal phase, also called andropause, whether they admit it or not. Although the signs and symptoms of menopause in men might be more difficult to detect, still they are very real.
Too often people refer to this time in a man’s life in a derogatory term as having a ‘mid-life crisis.’ This is also the most likely reason men are reluctant to admit when it starts and do not seek medical advice. Female menopause is easy to detect due to the physical changes their bodies undergo. For men, as middle-age approaches they experience a more gradual drop in their testosterone levels.
Some men are lucky and hardly notice the signs and symptoms of menopause. Hormone levels in men will reach a peak between the ages of 15 to 18 and during this period they are the most sexually driven. Normally, their testosterone levels will maintain healthy levels, but by the age of 40 most experience lower levels. By the age of 50, on average, half of all men are experiencing significantly lower testosterone levels.
Know Your Body
Menopause and the accompanying signs and symptoms of menopause can occur naturally in men. It can also be triggered by various medical conditions such as obesity, depression and certain illnesses. Diseases such as cancer and autoimmune can play a significant role as well. Common signs and symptoms of menopause for men include mood swings, listlessness and often depression. Up to 80% of men experience a loss of sex drive.
Men often complain about experiencing low libido as well as problems maintaining an erection. Unfortunately, far too many men refuse to acknowledge the signs and symptoms of menopause. In doing this they simply create far more problems for themselves than are necessary.
All men should educate themselves on the causes as well as the signs and symptoms of menopause. In this way, they work from a basis of knowledge and thus when they start experiencing the signs and symptoms of menopause they will know what to do about it.
