Prescription And Nonprescription Anxiety And Insomnia Treatments

Often when people consistently have trouble getting to sleep at night it is anxiety-related. It is very difficult to relax when there are several issues worrying you. What’s more, stress and anxiety are very common in modern society. We are perpetually worried about our jobs, families, romantic relationships and financial obligations. It therefore is not surprising that there are so many different anxiety and insomnia treatment options available. Many of these remedies work quite effectively, although some come with the risk of potential side effects. This can make deciding on the best treatment for insomnia and anxiety quite difficult.
Psychotherapy And Hypnosis
You can try every single one of the prescription and nonprescription medicines for anxiety and insomnia treatments but this may only mask the problem. To get rid of your anxiety and be able to get some rest you must address the root cause. This could mean psychotherapy sessions to help you manage your anxiety and put your problems into perspective. Alternatively, you may require hypnotherapy in order to help you think about sleep and about going to bed in a different way. After all, if you are worried about being unable to sleep before your head even hits the pillow it will obviously be more difficult to get some rest.
Prescription Medications
Certain prescription medications make effective short term anxiety and insomnia treatments. Examples of commonly used prescription medications that are used to treat anxiety and insomnia include sedative benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonopin. These drugs can cause side effects such as memory loss, weakened reasoning, drowsiness, disorientation, nausea, dizziness and slow reflexes. If these prescription anxiety and insomnia treatments are mixed with other drugs they can lead to coma or a fatal overdose. They also have a risk of dependency and people who stop taking them abruptly may experience withdrawal symptoms.
Herbal Alternatives
Because prescription anxiety and insomnia treatments can be dangerous many people prefer to use herbal alternatives instead. Herbal anxiety and insomnia treatments include lavender, valerian, hops, kava kava and chamomile. These herbal remedies can be very effective in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia because they have a sedative effect. However before trying any of these herbal anxiety and insomnia treatments it is vitally important to have a conversation with your doctor. Herbal remedies can be very potent and may cause some unwanted side effects. They are not safe for people with certain medical conditions and they can cause unpleasant or even fatal interactions when mixed with certain prescription medications.
