Even for people who can shut their mind down, wind down time is important. It can be difficult to go from active to sedentary without any in between stage. Reading a book for an hour before bed can be a great way to wind down, or even just watching a television show without the interruption of children or a spouse. Some people like to do a crossword puzzle or play a game of Soduko before hitting the pillow. You should do whatever works for you to help you wind down and avoid insomnia.

For some people, simple ideas like drinking hot tea before bed or finding time to calm their mind before trying to sleep just will not work. Some insomnia sufferers do not have problems getting to sleep- it’ s the staying asleep that is the problem. If this is you, then you should talk to your doctor about your insomnia problems. While there is no one blanket insomnia treatment, there are many different treatments that doctor can try. He or she might want you to participate in a sleep study so that they can figure out if there is an underlying condition, like sleep apnea, causing them to wake up during the night. Their doctor might also prescribe sleeping pills. If she or he does so, it is advised to fully understand how to take them properly and what the potential long term effects will be.
