The Devastating Effects Of Insomnia And Sleep Disturbances

Occasional insomnia and sleep disturbances are annoying for anyone who encounters them, but long term insomnia can have some very serious effects on the body. Transient sleep disorders occur for brief lengths of time ranging from one day to a few weeks and while they leave you swaggering about feeling drunk and a little loopy chances are the effects will be mild. If, on the other hand, you suffer from acute or chronic insomnia and sleep disturbances you should seek medical help because those mild effects can quickly turn to severe and even life-threatening problems.
While there is no clear cut insomnia remedy helping your body to relax and seeking relief from anxieties you may be experiencing can help considerably especially in the case of transient insomnia and sleep disturbances.
Sleep Disturbance Effects
The effects of insomnia and sleep disturbance can create havoc in your life in anything from work to the ability to enjoy favorite hobbies and pastimes. They include:
Dizziness—Great care should be taken when driving or taking part in any activity where becoming unbalanced could cause injury if you are experiencing bouts of dizziness due to insomnia and other sleep disturbances.
Fatigue—General tiredness is the most common sleep disorder symptom but this can become quite severe even at this level causing extreme muscle fatigue and the inability to function or carry out physical tasks.
Depression—Both from a general sense of unease and also out of aggravation over not being able to sleep well.
Hypertension—A general increase in blood pressure is often one of the more serious of the mild side effects and left unchecked over a long period of time can trigger high blood pressure problems that are more severe and chronic.
Slurred Speech—This insomnia and sleep disturbance effect is one of the most visible (or audio) signals to others that something is not right. It is also traumatic for the person suffering from a sleep disorder and may impair their ability to hold down a job if it continues for a long period of time.
Tremors—Mild to severe shaking from extreme muscle fatigue is a common effect of insomnia and sleep disturbances. While not life-threatening in and of itself it can be dangerous in circumstances involving the operation of machinery or driving, and can seriously impact working ability.
Delayed Reactions—Poor reaction times are annoying and may cause you to falter on the job, but they are the most dangerous in a driving situation.
Heart Palpitations and Heart Disease—Long term sleep deprivation caused by sleep disorders have a serious effect on the heart and can lead to heart disease and even heart failure if left untreated.
