There Are Several Herbal Treatments For Insomnia

Here in the United States, many people who have a problem falling asleep at night overlook herbal treatments for insomnia. Instead, they make an appointment with their health care provider to ask about a prescription medication that they have heard about via the media. Perhaps such individuals do not realize that herbal treatments for insomnia can be every bit as effective as prescription medications but they are generally far less dangerous. That doesn’t mean that you should try any of the available herbal treatments for insomnia without doing some research and discussing it with your doctor first. These herbs can have some side effects and may not be safe for people with certain health conditions. They can also interact with certain prescription medications so always check just to be on the safe side.

Valerian

One of the most commonly used herbal treatments for insomnia is valerian, a resilient flowering perennial plant. In fact valerian is an excellent anxiety insomnia treatment because it is a natural sedative. It is therefore ideal for those who cannot sleep because they are worried, stressed or anxious. Valerian is best taken in capsule form since it has an odor that some find reminiscent of sweaty feet. Valerian should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding woman or people with liver or kidney problems. Nor should valerian be taken in conjunction with certain prescription sedatives or anti-anxiety medications. Never use valerian when you have to operate heavy machinery because it causes drowsiness.

Kava Kava

Kava kava is a shrub from the pepper family and the root of the plant has been used for thousands of years. Today it is used in alternative medicine as an herbal treatment for insomnia and anxiety and scientific studies have proven it effective. Taking too much of this herb can cause a feeling of intoxication and lead to pulmonary hypertension. It should not be used by people with liver problems such as cirrhosis or hepatitis. Nor is it safe for people with Parkinson’s Disease since it exacerbates the symptoms. People taking prescription drugs for the treatment of psychosis or medicine that has an impact on dopamine levels should also avoid using kava kava.

Chamomile

People all over the world drink chamomile tea before going to bed in order to help them get to sleep at night. Chamomile is a flower from the daisy family with mild sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. Although chamomile is an excellent herbal treatment for insomnia it should not be used by people who have allergies or those who are taking blood thinning medications.

Hops

Hops is another herbal treatment for insomnia that has been used for thousands of years. It is a strong sedative that also relieves pain. Today it is used to treat insomnia, irritability and stress. Although hops is considered one of the safest herbs it may exacerbate the symptoms of depression and should not be used by people with certain food allergies.
