What is Chronic Fatigue Insomnia?

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a complex illness that affects women far more than men. Chronic fatigue insomnia occurs when patients with chronic fatigue syndrome are unable to get a good night’s rest. It is not uncommon for patients with chronic fatigue to experience insomnia as well. Because the condition is already characterized by extreme exhaustion, the fact that the patient cannot get a full night’s sleep merely serves to exacerbate the condition. This article will delve into chronic fatigue insomnia, including some of the symptoms of the condition and treatment options that are available.

Symptoms
While most would assume that chronic fatigue insomnia indicates an inability to get sufficient rest, the condition can actually take on a number of forms. Some patients may not be able to get to sleep easily at night. They may lie awake for many hours, feeling exhausted, but unable to get relief through quality sleep. Others may fall asleep relatively easily, but wake frequently during the night. This could be due to the ongoing pain that is often characteristic of chronic fatigue insomnia or to a related condition like restless leg syndrome. Unfortunately, the lack of sleep will make other symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome worse and affect other areas of the patient’s life as well.

Treatment
When a patient is suffering from chronic fatigue insomnia, the doctor may prescribe treatment to deal with the sleep issues at the same time the other symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are addressed. In many cases, chronic fatigue insomnia can be effectively treated through behavioral therapies. The patient learns good sleep habits that will help him relax in the evening and prepare for the important job of sleeping through the night successfully. In some cases, a medication may be prescribed for the first few weeks as well, to insure the patient receives sufficient rest as he is creating good sleep habits. Most sleep aids cannot be used for more than a couple of weeks at a time. If the patient does not see improvement after the first round of medication, a second round may be prescribed.

Chronic fatigue insomnia is a problem for many patients dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome. While doctors cannot cure chronic insomnia completely in all cases, they do have treatment options at their disposal to help patients manage their condition and get better rest more often. If you are dealing with chronic fatigue insomnia, talk to your doctor about possible choices in treatment today.
