You should not be eating right before bed and most important of all, stay away from caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake. Best practice: no caffeine past 4PM.
Another suggestion to help with bad insomnia is to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water, (keeping yourself hydrated), and that you are exercising on a regular basis. This is all important to keep you in good health, and allow you to relax enough to sleep well during the night.
