It is a double-edged sword that seems to have no end and can make someone suffering through it feel like they are living on the edge of insanity.

Fact Or Fiction?

Some studies suggest sleep deprivation and insomnia are just myths, but anyone who has suffered from either ailment will beg to differ. Sleep deprivation and insomnia are real and it is difficult to overcome them. The longer the problem persists the harder it can be to make them go away.

Types Of Sleep Deprivation and Insomnia

Usually when people think of insomnia they think of not being able to sleep at all. That is the most drastic form of insomnia sleep deprivation but it is not the only type. Delayed sleep phase insomnia has just as much impact on the insomniac’s life and can make them spend their daytime hours feeling like they are walking around in a fog. Those that suffer from delayed sleep phase insomnia do fall asleep but it takes hours of tossing and turning. They usually end up falling asleep well after midnight and have a great deal of trouble waking up in the morning.

Overcoming Insomnia

There are methods of preventing insomnia that actually won’t help as much once the cycle has begun. It is important to get past current sleep deprivation caused by insomnia first before setting out to be sure it doesn’t happen again. Some things you can do to break the cycle of insomnia and the sleep deprivation it creates are:

Relax in a warm bath: A long, warm bath is wonderfully soothing. It also helps to increase blood flow, allowing you to have a better night’s sleep.

Have a warm relaxing drink: Avoid caffeine or alcohol, both may initially feel good but they will not relax your body. Warm milk really does help induce sleep, the calcium in it soothes nerves and makes your body sleepy. Herbal tea is a great warm, soothing drink as well.

Consider your position: Sleeping on your stomach is hard on your body and so is sleeping on your sides. Lie on your back to provide the best position for your internal organs and let your body relax.
Stay awake: that may seem like the opposite of what you want to do but do not allow yourself to nap during the day no matter how tired you are. You can upset your body’s clock further when it is time to go to bed at night.
